I get a lot of questions about how to make a window look good but still functional.
And the answer I always give is to layer your window treatments. Combining function with style will not only make your window look more professionally designed but will satisfy your needs as well.
Here's some ideas to think about:
1. Roman shades on the window... pleated drapes on the outside edges. This combination creates the function of privacy and light control with the roman shades and defines the window with the pleated drapes.
You can vary this idea by using a london shade or an austrian shade instead of the roman shade.
2. A fabric cloud or balloon shade with a sheer version beneath. Raise and lower the sheer balloon shade for privacy. Lower the fabric balloon shade for privacy. When It's raised, vary the lengths of the shades to add interest.
3. Double up on the drapes. Hang your pleated drapes on one rod. And then on a smaller rod hang sheer pleated drapes. Draw the sheer drapes closed for light control and privacy. In fact you can triple this effect. Have one set permanently left open for definition. One set of sheers. And one set of fabric for privacy.
4. Box pleated valance and a roman shade. Add the roman shade for privacy. And the box pleated valance for interest. Add a third layer of a flat sheer panel behind the roman shade. Now you can raise the roman shade and still have privacy.
Almost any 2 window treatments can be combined to add style and function. So when you're designing your next window treatment, consider what other layer you can add...
Imagine, create and enjoy!
